Drama as ACE students begin exam

$

An adage that says whatever that has beginning must have an end is now the case for the second (rain) semester that is gradually coming to an end with the students who have just started their semester examination on Monday 8th August, 2016.

The semester which began some months ago witnessed a serene and calm atmosphere in lecture rooms and strategic places where students usually hang out before are seen quietly taken over by students who are seen busy writing examinations or reading and having group tutorials.

In few of the examination halls visited and comments from some examination invigilators reveal that the newly introduced Downloaded Tutorial List (DTL) as examination attendance sheet supporting document has actually helped the College to fish out many unregistered students who had come to sit for the ongoing examination. In fact, some students were found destabilized and worried in the examination halls when they could not found their names on the DTL. Various dramatic showswere displayed by those students involved as they seek divine intervention for way out for them. Some presented cloned registration form to justify themselves while others resolved to beg for permission to be allowed to write the examination and to do the normal registration thereafter.

As a matter of fact, some lecturers attested to the fact that when they later downloaded their tutorial lists which they have downloaded previously, the number has magically and marginally increased due to the measure introduced as some of the students have rushed to pay their school fees and consequently registered. Some of them had even paid but never registered until the examination day. It is hoped that this measure will create the awareness of early and due registration culture in students and deter those who have ever thought they can defraud the College without paying fees and write exams successfully.

On a very remarkable note, the College Management under the leadership of the Provost, Prof. Olukoya Ogen is well appreciated for the peaceful atmosphere that is witnessed in the College and in the examination halls. The examination is expected to end in the firt week of September.

The Public Relations Officer {PRO} of Adeyemi College of Education {ACE} Ondo, Mr. Akinfolarin Olusola Moses, has giving out his daughter’s hand in marriage in Ile-Oluji town, headquarters of Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government in Ondo State. The colourful ceremony was held on Saturday August 6, 2016.

In a sermon delivered at the Church service where the solemnization of the holy matrimony between his (Akinfolarin’s) daughter, Oluwatoyin Ore-ofe and her heartthrob, Olutayo Ademola Agunbiade took place, the Senior Pastor of the Life Solution Apostolic Ministry (LISAM) Ile-Oluji, Ondo State Rev. Raphael Obolanle, advised the newly married couple, to always surrender their lives to Christ, stating that the decision would enable them have successful marriage life.

Speaking on a topic entitled: “Foundation and rules for Achieving a successful Christian Marriage,” the cleric while citing the book of Ephesian 5:20-33, observed that for the concept of marriage to be properly understood, there is need for people to have good idea of the type they want to choose and adequate knowledge of what it entails.

He listed various types of marriages that are common in Yoruba land, South-West Nigeria, to include traditional, Christian, Islamic as well as the one conducted in the Registry popularly referred to as court marriage.

While emphasizing the need for people particularly Christians to show more preference for marriage undertaken through Christian mode above others, the religious leader said his assertion was not propelled by sentiment, but by the fact that the foundation of such marriage is guided by biblical injunction and firmly rooted in the word of God.

Expressing serious concern on what he described as increasing cases of failed marriages, which according to him is fast becoming the trend in the contemporary society; Rev. Obolanle blamed the situation on what he described as “wrong perception of what marriage entails” by people.

The cleric condemned the practice of lesbianism, sodomy, single sex and gay marriages currently in vogue in some advanced countries, stating that the act which should be avoided, negates the commandment of God which only permits people of opposite sexes to marry.

He said: “The problem that is noticed nowadays in marriage occurs, because some people have wrong perception of what marriage look like.

“Christian Marriage is premised on one man, one woman and not man to man, woman to woman, which is an act from Satan and not from God”.

On how to achieve peace at the home front and have a successful marriage, the cleric stressed the need for husband to exhibithigh degree of responsibility in the performance of his role as the head of the house.

Similarly, he equally advised the wives to be submissive and show respect to their husbands stating that the development would help in making their marriages to succeed.

Rev. Obolanle also harped on the need for husband and wife to constantly seek the face of God through prayers and regular reading of the bible, in order to enjoy spiritual blessings.

The LISAM Senior Pastor listed six steps that could be taken by married couple while undergoing marriage journey to include having a mindset of what marriage entails, submission of wife to husband, display of love by husband to wife, learning how to live together as one as well as covering the nakedness or weaknesses of one another and learning to forgive each other.

While congratulating the newly married couple and their parents for guiding and placing them on the right path, the religious leader advised them not to deviate from the word of God, by adhering strictly with the vow they made to each other.

He equally advised them to exhibit tolerance, perseverance and mutual understanding by regarding marriage as “as a School of character, where learning is undertaken till eternity”

The two-day marriage ceremony which began with engagement ceremony held at the residence of the Akinfolarin’s, climaxed with the entertainment of guests at Odundun multipurpose Hall, Ile-Oluji town.

The colourful ceremony was attended by eminent personalities from home and abroad. They include the Lisa of Ile-Oluji, High Chief Akin Fagbamiye, Otunba Olapeju, the Chairman of the occasion, Hon. (Mrs) Folake Omojuwa; Chairperson Mr. John Akindutire, Hon. (Mrs.) Akinbobola Iyabo, father of the groom, Mr. Agunbiade, Staff of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, family and friends of bride and groom among others.

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has organized a two-day training programme for Management, Directors, and Heads of Units of Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo.

Speaking on a topic entitled “Overview of the Public Procurement Act 2007”, the Head of Training Unit at the BPP, Mr. Lanre Obasa described procurement as a serious business which encompasses a sequence of related activities which begins with the assessment of needs, award and management of contracts, and final payment for jobs executed.

While stressing the need for all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) established by the Federal Government to get acquainted with information contained in the Public Procurement Act 2007, Obasa said this was necessary because Nigeria cannot take the back seat in the comity of nations in the application of the Public Procurement Act, which is now accepted globally by developed and developing countries alike.

He enlightened participants on various topics contained in the Procurement Act 2007 which include functions and powers of the BPP, scope of application of the Act, fundamental principles of procurement, responsibility of Accounting Officers, overview of the Public Procurement process as well as what constitutes offences and sanctions that would be meted out to offenders.

While emphasizing the need for heads of MDAs to always be conscious of their responsibility as accounting officers, the head of BPP Training Unit advised them to exercise total control and supervision of all procurement activities undertaken in their establishments.

He stressed the importance of unity and cooperation stating that the procurement process, which could be likened to a chain, required the performance of series of activities by different sets of people, hence anyone who failed to carry out the role assigned to him or her could be sanctioned.

The BPP official emphasized the need for the establishment of Procurement Planning Committee (PPC) and Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) stating that their services are needed during the pre-bid, bidding and post bid stages. He also underscored the need for openness and transparency during the process of bidding and Tender Opening.

Obasa, however, warned officers in charge of procurement not to indulge in any unethical act that could affect their career. Such acts include collusive agreement, procurement fraud, splitting of tender amount, bid rigging, alteration of procurement documents as well as the use of fake documents and willful refusal to allow BPP officers have access to any procurement records.

Also in his presentation, the Head of Procurement at the BPP, Mr. Aliyu E. Aliyu spoke on the need for all MDAs to have a Procurement Office as well as Procurement Planning Committee (PPC) in their establishments.

As prerequisite qualifications, Aliyu said such officers must be familiar with and have adequate knowledge of procurement materials and associated skills in order to enhance effective discharge of their responsibilities.

Speaking on the topic: “Understanding the Use of Standard Bidding Documents (SBD) and Stand Request for Proposal (SReP)”, the BPP head of e-procurement highlighted areas of coverage of the SBD to include procurement of works, small works, goods and national shopping.

On Complaints Procedure and Administrative Review under the Public Procurement Act, 2007, Aliyu stated that it is only bidders that took part in a procurement process that can seek administrative review of their complaints. He highlighted steps that could be taken in matters relating to administrative review and period required for any action to be taken.

The BPP senior official advised procurement officers and heads of MDAs to always act within the ambit of the law in order to achieve favourable results from the procurement process.

In addition, he also admonished them to abstain from acts that are unlawful and unacceptable, ensure that bid losers are debriefed, make effective use of SDB and SRFP, and define qualifying criteria among others.

In his remarks, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen lauded the BPP for organising the training which he said was necessary to keep the staff of the institution abreast with the vision of the Federal Government.

He stated that his administration has always been acting within the rules and regulations specified in the Public Procurement Act 2007 and has always exhibited transparency in all its dealings.

Youths in Nigeria have been asked to initiate good ideas that would make them become self-reliant and to explore ways through which they could help the country overcome its present economic conundrum.

This call was made by resource persons who spoke during separate paper presentations at the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), a programme organized by the Rotary Club International of District 9125, which took place on Tuesday September 20, 2016. The programme which had participants selected from 23 states of the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was held at ACE, Ondo from Monday September 19-Saturday September 24, 2016.

Speaking on the theme: “Capacity Building Towards Self-Employment and Entrepreneurship”, two resource persons, Dr. Kehinde Adenegan, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Assistant Director, Management Information Systems Unit,  Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) and Chief (Hon.) Tola Wewe, former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ondo State respectively, stressed the need for youths to spend their time wisely by standing up to the challenges of the present time in the country, by being creative and showing more interest in entrepreneurship and wealth creation instead of sitting idle and looking endlessly for non-available white collar jobs.

Dr Adenegan, in another paper titled “Entrepreneurship as a means of Achieving Economic Growth in Nigeria”, described economic growth as the increase in value of goods and services produced in an economy.

He lamented what he described as the present poor state of Nigeria’s economy, which he noted was once described as the most developed in Africa, a description now fit for South Africa.

On how to remedy the situation, the Mathematics lecturer advised citizens of the country, particularly its youth to embrace entrepreneurship and acquire relevant skills, through which they would transform themselves from job seekers to job providers, adding that the step would go a long way in boosting the country’s economic growth.

Underscoring the importance of entrepreneurship, Adenegan mentioned that when youths learn a trade or craft, they would become employment creators and make meaningful contributions to national development.

In his paper: “Art and craft as a means of earning a living”, the former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ondo State, Chief Tola Wewe, highlighted various opportunities available in art and craft through which youths could earn a living. These opportunities include weaving, leather work, blacksmithing, carpentry embroidery, toy and bead making, as well as sculpture and painting.

Harping on the need for youths to rise up and participate in the development of the art, culture and music industry, Wewe said the step would help in the creation of employment opportunities and boost the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Earlier in his remarks, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen represented by the Dean, School of Science in the College, Dr. Folorunso Balogun, commended the Rotary Club International District 9125 for organizing the programme in the Institution.

Prof. Ogen described the theme of the five-day programme as apt, noting that its message is in consonance with his vision for the College.

The College administrator, however, advised participants to make judicious use of the knowledge acquired during the programme and urged them to continue to contribute their best to the development of the nation.

In his welcome address, the District Governor, Rotary International 9125, Rotarian Clement Adebisi Adegoke, stated that the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) was initiated for the purpose of creating opportunities for participants to learn skills that would make them useful in the future.

He advised participants to exhibit self-confidence, discipline and obey all rules and regulations during the exercise and urged them to make judicious use of knowledge acquired during the programme by going back to give their best to the society.

The colourful event also featured a welcome address by the Chairman RYLA Planning Committee, Rotarian Bose Olanusi and inspection of guards by the DG, Rotarian Adebisi Adegoke.

The programme also featured activities such as skills acquisition workshops, motivational talks, health lectures, football matches, camp-fire night, quiz competition, debate and beauty contests, and a recognition of the Houses in which the participants were grouped: Blue, White, Lilac, Yellow, Purple, Orange, Green and Red.

Workers in Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo have been advised to seek the face of God through constant prayers, in order to get divine attention and enjoy heavenly blessings.

This advice was given on Tuesday October 4, 2016 by a member of the College Pastoral team, Mr. Johnson Oluremi Falade, while delivering a sermon at the October edition of the monthly prayer meeting organised in the Institution.

He highlighted various ways through which the Almighty God Has shown goodness, mercy and grace to mankind, stating that as beneficiaries of the uncountable blessings. He said, the best way human beings could show appreciation, is by expressing gratitude to God at all times.

Reminding people of the importance of prayers, Falade, a clergyman cum Lecturer in the Department of French in the College, explained that the Lord Jesus Christ used the Parable of a widow, who repeatedly sought the help of a judge for justice, as stated in the book of Luke chapter 18 v 1-8 to depict the need for people to pray to God “without ceasing”.

He cited the book of Rev 8:1-5 to buttress his point and described prayers as raw materials needed in heaven by God, to bring miracles “adding that the Almighty father is always expecting prayers from those that are “born again” to give them the expected result”.

The cleric bemoaned what he observed as negative trends of prayerlessness and increasing lack of faith, that is gradually creeping into Christendom in the present world, a development he said, has misled some people to place their trust on human beings as exemplified by church leaders and pastors, instead of relying on Jesus “who owns the key that opens door”.

In his short remarks, the Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, who spoke on behalf of the Provost, Prof. Olukoya Joseph Ogen, enjoined workers in the College to continue to show commitment in the discharge of their duties and appealed to them to continue to remember the College Management and the Institution in their prayers.

He thereafter briefed the College community about the trip of the Provost to Uganda, Kampala for a one-week International manuscripts development workshop. He stated that the programme, held under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies, would take place from 4th-9th October, 2016.

The monthly prayer event which featured rendition of songs, delivery of sermon and offering of prayers for the country’s economic recovery, peace, progress and advancement of the College, was attended by the Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi, members of the College Pastoral team, staff from various Departments and Units in the Institution.

While urging teachers to live above board in the discharge of their duties, Prof. Ajiboye said the TRCN Act was enacted to match teacher quality, discipline, professionalism, reward and dignity with international standard.
