Why ethnic conflict persists in Nigeria by History Lecturer

A lecturer in the Department of HistoryAdeyemi College of Education {ACE} Ondo, {Dr.} Ajigbade Ikuejube, has highlighted reasons why ethnic conflicts persist in Nigeria.

Speaking while delivering the 2nd ACE Inaugural lecture entitled: “Historicizing Ethnic Conflict in Nigeria,” which held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium in the College on Wednesday May 26, 2016, Ajigbade described ethnic conflict as a continuation of centuries of primordial hatred among various communities in Nigeria. He added that the conflict which is man-made is caused by social/political discords occasioned by land and boundary matters.

Using structural and relational theories to buttress his points, the history lecturer explained that while supporters of the structural theory attributes ethnic conflict to social problems caused by political economic exclusion, injustice, exploitation and inequality, the relational theorists on the other hand placed it at the doorstep of historical antecedents.

While decrying what he described as the inability of Government and Non-Government Organisation {NGO’s}, to adequately address the problem of ethnic conflict in Nigeria, Ikuejube opined that much have not been achieved because they have failed to recognise the influence of culture and traditional practices of the people in policy formulation. On the increasing cases of clashes and lack of Unity among ethnic groups in Nigeria, Ikuejube lamented the situation and stated that the matter could have been addressed, if government had taken it upon itself, to develop a template through which history of conflict among ethnic groups, centred on resource control and struggle for political supremacy could be used to nip it in the bud.

He explained that ethnic conflict continue to rear its ugly head in the country, because of lack of proper understanding of history behind inter-ethnic aged-long relationship by those in authority. Describing ethnic conflict as a concept that have shaped human existence and influence issues like state formation, boundary consolidation, cultural harmonization, identity definition and commercial relations, the ACE history lecturer attributed its origin in Nigeria to several factors which he listed as including the advent of colonial rule, emergence of aborigines and tenancy status in some communities, expansionist tendencies displayed by some communities against other towns and settlements, as well as emergence of ethnic unions, struggling to have a share of the National cake.

Bemoaning the emergence of ethnic unions in the country, Ikuejube noted that the development has led to proliferation of rivalries, increasing cry of marginalisation in appointments, constant demand for creation of local government and payment of compensation in areas affected by oil spillage and other ecological problems as well as increasing demand for the establishment of Federal and State institutions, which at times have pitted one communities against another.

While expressing serious concern about what he described as the evil effect of ethnic conflict and its resultant effect on national unity, which he noted is currently heating up the polity threatening and raising fear of possible breakup of the country, the History lecturer said except urgent steps are taken to address the situation, it is capable of having serious repercussion on nation building and economic transformation.

As a way of addressing the situation, Ikuejube suggested the need to give opportunity to every ethnic group to communicate their feelings to one another. In addition, he also suggested the re-establishment of mutual trust and understanding among ethnic groups that was in palace before the advent of colonial era.

Other suggestions listed by him include use of bargaining and negotiation for conflict resolution, introduction of peace education in schools, promotion of Non-violence techniques in conflict Management to mention out a few.

Earlier in a remark, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Joseph ogen, described the Inaugural lecture as one of the academic tradition for which the institution is known. He congratulated Dr. Ajigbade Ikuejube and assured that the College Management under his leadership would continue to encourage intellectuals willing to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the institution.

The high point of the well attended ceremony was the presentation of plaque and certificate of recognition to Dr. Ajigbade Ikuejube by the Registrar of the College, Mr. Felix Eniola Aderinboye. Provost advocates government, private sector funding of education in Nigeria

The Provost of the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, Prof. Olukoya Joseph Ogen, has advocated the need for effective partnership between governments at all levels, and private sector, in the funding of education in Nigeria.

Prof. Ogen made the statement in an address delivered recently at the opening of the 6th Annual Conference of the School of Education, ACE, held on Tuesday June 14, 2016 in the Institution.

While noting the enormous resources needed for funding of education in Nigeria, the ACE helmsman, opined that for the education sector to achieve its goals especially now in the face of dwindling revenue, “it is necessary for the private sector to assist the government by making financial contributions to its development.”

Underscoring the importance of teachers in the society, Prof. Ogen stated that “the progress of any nation depend on what goes on in the classroom”.

He commended the organizers of the conference and observed that its theme: “Restructuring the Nigerian Educational System for Global Best Practices and Poverty Alleviation” is apt and timely.

While stressing the need for restructuring of Education Curricula, the College Administrator said the move would help in promoting self employment and boost poverty alleviation in the country.

In a keynote address delivered on the occasion by Dr. Adesina Olusola Joseph, he emphasized the need for government at all levels in Nigeria to pay greater attention to the development of education, which he described as “the best legacy a country can give to her citizens.”

While decrying what the observed as falling standard of education “inspite of government commitment to its advancement over the years” Adesina represented by Dr. Akande, also lamented poor attitude of students to learning, challenges of unemployment, poverty, insecurity as well as social unrest in the country.

On why various educational policies introduced by successive governments in Nigeria failed to produce the desired result, Adesina attributed the problem to placement of emphasis by government on paper qualification rather than skill acquisition.

Also in a lead paper presented at the conference by Dr. Festus Oluwole Afolabi, a lecturer in the Department of Educational Administration and Planning, ACE, on the topic entitled: “Restructuring Tertiary Education in Nigeria For Global Best practices and Poverty Alleviation,” he identified poverty as one of the factors responsible for slow pace of development in Nigeria.

Afolabi also emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship education, stating that the provision of access to it by government to all citizens would go a long way in promoting wealth creation, improved economic growth, encourage effective utilization of domestic or locally produced cash crops as well as bringing about reduction in crime.

As a way of improving the welfare of the populace, the Educational Administration and Planning expert, advised all tiers of government, to make concerted effort in the provision of infrastructural facilities such as good road networks, regular electricity supply of portable water, building of hospitals as well as provision of Information Communication Technology.

On how to achieve proper restructuring of tertiary education in Nigeria, Afolabi harped on the need for all stakeholders to provide necessary infrastructural support and adequate funding to enhance teaching and research, stating that the move would enable the citizens to reap maximum benefits from tertiary institutions.

Earlier in her remark, the Chairman of the Conference ceremony, Mrs. Oluwatosin Titi Akinsiku, described lack of political will on the part of the country’s administrators as one of the problems affecting Nigerian’s educational system.

She advocated increased funding of education by government and appealed for improvement in the welfare of teachers, government officials as well as provision of loans, grants and scholarship to indigent students, saying the step would add values to their lives.

Also in her address of welcome, the Dean, School of Education, ACE, Dr (Mrs.) Oyenike Alake Oyinloye, stated that the theme of the conference “Restructuring the Nigerian Educational System For Global Best Practices Poverty Alleviation” was chosen, in order to proffer solutions to problems facing educational system in Nigeria.

While making strong case for total over-hauling of Nigerian educational system, Oyinloye explained that the step was necessary in order for the country to meet up “with the desired needs and at the same time, compete favorably with the standard obtainable in other developed countries”

She appreciated the College Management for providing financial support for the hosting of the conference and thanked Resource Persons invited for their presence at the conference.

The programme held at the Obongawan Lecture Theatre was attended by important personalities from within and outside the College including the Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, representative of the College Registrar, Mr. Felix Aderinboye, Mrs. Fisayo Fakorede; Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi.

Also present were, Dr. Ajigbade Ikuejube; Dean, School of Science, Dr. Folorunso Balogun, Dean, Student Affairs, Mr. Olaniyi Olaluwoye.  Other who graced the occasion include, Director of Part-Time Studies, Mr. Agun; Director Ventures and Linkages, Dr. Peter Akinbile; Acting Director, Counselling and Human Development, Dr(Mrs.) C.B Obasoro; Director, Post-Graduate School and Research, Dr. Ekundayo as well as Director Management Information System (MIS), Engineer Femi Adedeji to mention but few.

A youth corp member, Osamusanmi Afe Tosin, has organized a five-day entrepreneurship training programme for staff and students of Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo.

The exercise began on Monday July 25 and ended on Friday July 29, 2016 respectively in the College.

Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, Osamusanmi, who is currently undertaking her one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme at the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) in the College, explained that the free entrepreneurship training exercise,  was organized in order to reduce level of unemployment and poverty among unemployed youth,  and to providemeans of livelihood to less priviledged persons including physically challenged and widows in the College andOndo community in general.

While bemoaning the plight of unemployed youth in the country, the Youth Corp member, opined that the situation could be addressed through provision of skill acquisition and establishment of entrepreneurial training centres across the country. She stated that
the step would enable those who offered themselves for the training to acquire necessary skills that would transform them from job seekers to employment providers.

She listed areas where participants undertook training during the five-day exercise to include bead and wire-work production; hairdressing, soap making, cream, perfume and disinfectants
production.

Others are bridal handfan / bouquet production; makeover, facial art, bridal gele production, tie and die, banner making, T-shirt customization as well as web design.

In addition, she also stated that participants were alsotrained in areas which includedriving, agro fishing, cake and confectionaries production; photography / Video editing, bags/ souvenirs production, shoe making, DSTV installation, POP ceiling / Cement art work as well as fashion designing and cellphone repairing.

Osamusanmi expressed appreciation to the Management of ACE under the leadership of Prof. Olukoya Ogen, for giving approval for the exercise to hold in the institution.

She equally thanked corporate bodies which included Mobile Telecommunication giant, Airtel as well as an indigenous company, Trend and the Ondo State branch of the Chartered Institute of Project Management (CIPM) for supporting the programme.

Delivering a paper entitled: ‘’ How to create, manage and increase multiple means of income and ‘’How to start my own business’’ at the closing ceremony of the programme, the Ondo State Coordinator of CIPM, Mr. Omon Ogude represented by Mrs. Akinwumiju Dunni, an Architect, lauded the initiative of Osamusanmi and expressed optimism that the programme would go a long way in adding values to the lives of the participants.

Omon equally stated that knowledge acquired at the training would be of immense benefit to the participants and the society at large.

While harping on the need for youth to embrace entrepreneurship training as means to becoming self-reliant, the Ondo State Coordinator of CIPM said the decision would help in making them job providers and boost economic fortunes of the country.

He, therefore, appealed to the government at all levels in the country to give more attention to the provision of employment opportunities through the establishment of skills acquisition centres, where he said job seekers could be trained on ways to acquire necessary skills that
would enable them to make valuable contributions to national development.

Cleric to ACE staff, students: Don’t keep malice

Workers and students in Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo have been admonished to shun the habit of keeping malice with their fellow human beings.

The advice was given in a message delivered by a clergyman, who also doubles as a lecturer in the institution, Mr. Johnson Oluremi Falade, at the August edition of the monthly prayer meeting held on Monday August 1, 2016 in the College.

While speaking on a topic entitled : ‘’ The God of new things’’, he statedthat anyone who keeps malice by remembering things done to him or her in the past, couldbe influencedby Satan to do things that would go against the will of God.

According to him, people who wish to associate with God Almighty should not harbor malice in their hearts, as they could be denied several benefits from God. He also stated that such people could have encumbrances on their ways which could affect their livesand
truncate their future aspirations.

He said:’’ Our God is a God of new things; people should not remember former things. It is very unfortunate to see nowadays that large percentage of people always remember things done to them in the past that are bad. Except people overlook the past, the thought about it,
could hinder their present and truncate their progress’’
.
‘’When you remember old things and events that had happened in the past, the spirit of malice is likely to come in’’, he warned.

While encouraging the people not to despair in spite of the current economic situation in the country, Falade, a Lecturer in the Department of French, expressed optimism of God’s intervention, stating that as the creator of the universe, the Almighty Father has the capacity to change the situation for good as ‘’He is the only one that could make road in the wilderness and produce rivers in the desert’’.
.
The cleric, while quoting several passages from the Holy Scripture in places which include Isaiah 43: 18-19; Ezekiel 36: 25-26 and Colossians 3: 5-9 to buttress his sermon, admonished Christians to shun fornication, adultery, wickedness and other negative acts, which runs contrary to the word of God.

On the contrary, he advised them to have complete change of heart by doing new things that would bring joy to them not only in the month of August but throughout the rest of their lives.

The French lecturer also emphasized the need for people to move closer to God by having a ‘’new heart and spirit’’ stating that the Almighty God would not associate with people that have the spirit of the ‘’Old man’’ but one that has undertaken spiritual rebirth to become a new
creature.

The programme held at the Olusegun Obasanjo auditorium featured activities which include bible reading, song ministration, word of admonition as well as prayers for peace, progress and unity in the College and Nigeria in general.

It was attended by some members of the College Management including the Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, staff from various Departments and Units as well as students and other members of the College community.
